Crafts with Coppélia
Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10-11AM
Idaho Ballet Theatre Studios

Many from the community joined IBT for Crafts with Coppélia. Idaho Ballet Theatre sold out of its first, Nutcracker Tea Party event this past December, so Coppélia needed her own party! IBT thought it would be fun for guests to bring their favorite dolls with them to this event.

“Crafts with Coppélia” guests enjoyed goodies, created a doll-themed craft to take home, and met the doll, Coppélia, as well as several other characters from the ballet. Guests stepped inside Dr. Coppelius’ toy workshop and explored the world of Coppélia!

A magical interactive story telling of Coppélia, with the Idaho Ballet Theatre featuring storytelling as dancers read and act out the whimsical story. Guests learned about a clever girl named Swanhilda who discovers a doll so lifelike, everyone thinks it’s real!

Crafts with Coppélia were able to see the costumes that were worn in IBT’s 2024 Spring production, met a the dancers, engaged in crafts, and took photos with these favorite characters, and experienced the timeless tale of Coppélia like never before! It was a truly unforgettable experience.

The Crafts with Coppélia event serves as a fundraiser to provide scholarships for IBT dancers.

Thanks to our generous Crafts with Coppélia Sponsors

IBT’s

SPRING

PERFORMANCE

OF COPPÉLIA

IIdaho Ballet Theatre is bringing to stage, this family friendly classical ballet, Coppélia. This spring around 80 dancers from our community ages 3-17 will participate in this whimsical ballet featuring new choreography under the artistic direction of, Abbey Lasley and Joni McDonald.

Just as Giselle is ballet’s great tragedy, so Coppélia is its great comedy.

George Balanchine

Considered one of the greatest comic ballets of the last century, Coppélia remains one of the be-loved classical ballet works. Set in an Austrian village, the doll maker, Dr. Coppélius has made a beautiful mechanical doll that he has named Coppélia, where she sits on his balcony reading her book. However, she is so realistic that everyone mistakes her for a young girl, possibly Dr. Coppélius’s daughter. The young Franz even falls in love with her, much to the annoyance of his fiancée, Swanhilda.

Determined to discover the secret behind the mysterious Coppélia, Swanhilda and her friends sneak into Dr Coppélius’s house, only to discover that her rival is nothing more than a mechanical doll. When Dr. Coppélius returns, the girls flee, but Swanhilda hides with Coppélia and disguises herself as the doll. At the same time, Franz sneaks in to meet Coppélia, but Dr. Coppélius catches him and puts him to sleep so he can use him to magically bring his beloved doll to life.

He believes he has succeeded when Coppélia seemingly springs to life, but it is actually Swanhilda dressed up as the doll. When Franz wakes up, Dr. Coppélius realizes he has been tricked and that Coppélia is still just a doll. Swanhilda forgives Franz and the two leave the house together as Dr. Coppelius begins work on new creations. These lovable characters will have you laughing throughout this charming and timeless ballet.

Coppélia will run Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18 at the Colonial Theatre in Idaho Falls.

Idaho Ballet Theatre’s Pointe Shoe Tutorial: Darning Pointe Shoes This is a tutorial explaining how to darn your pointe shoes. The chain stitch method is used in this quick tutorial.

Darning Pointe Shoes Tutorial Step by Step Picture Instructions

darning pointe shoes tutorial
  • Begin a blanket stitch at the corner of the box

  • Continue wrapping around the toe, without going on the toe

  • The stitch kit lid makes a good thimble

  • The satin will be tight. Make the stitches straight and close together.

  • Finish the stitching in a straight line between both corners and tie a knot.

  • Your thread should run along the edge of the box without going over.

  • Then peel and trim the remaining satin

  • This doesn’t have to be perfect. You can trim more as it naturally comes off.

  • The finished product!
